2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 27 in 100 homes · newer homes
  • About 27% of homes in Oakville were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In newer developments the hardware is often the same finish and style from house to house. A locksmith can offer upgrades that match what is already there, so a stronger cylinder or a new lever set fits in without looking like an afterthought.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 59% of homes in Oakville (2021 Census).Mixed housing means a locksmith sees a bungalow in the morning and a condo tower in the afternoon. The stocked van has house-door deadbolts, suite-door cylinders and the finishes for each, so neither kind of customer waits for a second visit.

Home Lockout Service

White door with a black keypad deadbolt and knob, beside a towel holding a lock body, latch, screwdriver and a tool bag. — Ennisclare Park
The call
The key slides in and turns all the way round, but the bolt stays put. There is no click, no resistance, just a key spinning in a lock that has stopped listening to it after years of daily use.

Vintage Mortise Lock Service

Closed mortise lock case with spindle opening, keyhole, latch and deadbolt on a wooden workbench. — Vintage Mortise Lock Service, Ennisclare Park
The call
After a wet summer the entry door sits lower in its frame. The lock works perfectly when the door is open, but with it shut you have to lift the handle and shoulder the door to get the deadbolt to throw.

Smart Lock Installation

Person holding a black door-handle assembly and a latch beside a glazed door with exposed lock openings. — Smart Lock Installation, Ennisclare Park
The call
There are four copies of the front-door key floating around: one with the cleaner, one with a neighbour, one on a hook at your parents' place, and one you honestly cannot account for. You would rather hand out codes you can switch off.

The call
The office has been reshuffled twice since the locks were last touched. Reception can open the server room, the warehouse crew has a key to accounting, and the chart that once explained who could open what has not been seen since the move.

High Security Locks

ScaleNot to scale

Homeowners often come to high security after a scare, whether their own or a neighbour's. The advice is the same either way: start with the strike and the bolt, add a cylinder that resists the common tricks, and take control of who can copy the key.

  1. Layer 1The key

    High Security Locks

A colleague showed you a video of a lock being opened with a bump key in a few seconds. Then you went home and noticed your own deadbolt is the same style, bought at a hardware store a decade ago.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

The keys the seller handed over came in a sandwich bag: six unlabelled copies for two locks of different makes from different decades. You have no idea how many more copies exist or who is holding them.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

The front door has a handsome lever and a keyed knob, and that is all. Nothing above it.

  4. Layer 4The door and frame

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

The shop's aluminum door has a bent meeting stile and the hookbolt is jammed half out. The alarm did its job and the display is untouched, but the entrance will not close properly and opening time is hours away.

Curious about the process?

My key snapped off in the lock. Is that still a lockout call?

It starts the same way and adds one step. The broken blade is removed with extraction tools that grip it and draw it out, rather than pushing it deeper, and then the door is opened normally. A key rarely breaks in a healthy cylinder, so the locksmith checks the pins and springs afterwards and cleans or services the cylinder if wear caused it. A new key is cut from the two halves or from the code, since a weakened copy would snap again.

Does a rented home need the landlord involved for this work?

Repairing a lock so it works as before is ordinary maintenance, but anything that changes who can open the door, such as a rekeyed cylinder or new keys, is something a tenant and landlord are expected to agree on and share keys for. The locksmith asks up front who should receive keys and can leave a note of what was done for the property manager, so both sides know what is on the door.

Will a smart lock fit my existing door?

Most residential doors have the standard preparation these locks are designed around: a large hole for the lock body, a smaller one in the edge for the bolt, and a thickness between roughly 35 and 45 millimetres. The locksmith measures all three plus the backset before recommending a model. Thicker doors take an extension kit, thin or glass-panelled doors and older doors with a mortise pocket call for a particular model or some preparation, and all of that is sorted out before the box is opened.

How often should a business change its keys as a matter of routine?

There is no fixed interval. Rekey on events rather than on a calendar: a key not returned, a lease change, a break-in, a renovation crew finished, or a key count that no longer matches the register. Businesses with a good register and a restricted keyway often go years between rekeys because nothing prompts one. A yearly check of the register against the keys on the hook is the habit that tells you when the time has come.
