Small things that matter

These are notes, not lectures. Each one takes something people often get wrong about locks and keys, explains it in a paragraph or two, and leaves you better placed to decide what your doors need and what they can happily do without.

Curious about the process?

Lockout Services

My key snapped off in the lock. Is that still a lockout call?

It starts the same way and adds one step. The broken blade is removed with extraction tools that grip it and draw it out, rather than pushing it deeper, and then the door is opened normally. A key rarely breaks in a healthy cylinder, so the locksmith checks the pins and springs afterwards and cleans or services the cylinder if wear caused it. A new key is cut from the two halves or from the code, since a weakened copy would snap again. Home Lockout Service

What should I have ready when I call?

The address and unit number, which door you are outside, what the lock looks like, and where the keys are: with someone, lost, broken or simply refusing. Say whether there is an alarm or a card reader on the door, who can disarm or confirm your authority, and whether the building has a property manager. If you can send a photo of the lock and the door edge, the right cylinders and cores come on the first trip. Business Lockout Service

My key is a restricted or high-security type. Can it still be extracted and replaced?

Extraction is the same careful process; the keyway is usually narrower and the cuts more complex, so it takes longer. The replacement key is different: restricted blanks are cut only from the system's records, so have the authorization card that was supplied with the system to hand, or the locksmith who installed it is contacted. Until then the spare, if you have one, keeps the door working. Broken Key Extraction

Should I upgrade to a stronger deadbolt while you are here?

It is the natural moment, because the door is already open for repair. A deadbolt with a full one-inch throw, a hardened insert against sawing and a low-profile face that resists a wrench grip, graded to a recognised durability standard, takes little extra effort to fit now compared with a return visit. Pair it with the reinforced strike and long screws and the door becomes hard to attack from any side. The choice is yours; the locksmith shows the options and lets you decide. How many new keys will I get, and can I get more later?

As many as you ask for, cut on site from the fresh pinning and tested in each door they should open; two or three is typical for a household. More can be cut later. When you do, bring one of the locksmith's originals to be copied rather than a copy of a copy, since every generation strays slightly from the intended depths. If any key is a restricted type, additional copies come from the record kept for that system rather than from a hardware store. Lock Rekeying

The door has to be pulled before the old bolt will lock. Will a new one fix that?

The new bolt will only lock as smoothly as the door and frame let it, so the locksmith deals with the cause as part of the installation. A door that has sagged on loose hinges gets longer hinge screws or a shim, thick weatherstrip is trimmed, and the strike is set from the bolt's actual position with the door closed. The pocket is bored deep enough for a full throw. Afterwards the bolt should slide with fingertip effort. Deadbolt Installation

Which finishes stand up to salt and winter?

Finish is one of the three categories on the residential hardware label, and it covers exposure to sun, humidity, salt and skin oils. In practice, PVD brass, satin nickel and stainless finishes tolerate a salted driveway well, powder-coated black holds up when it is not chipped, and traditional lacquered brass tends to bloom green where salt reaches it. A storm door or a small overhang helps any finish, and wiping salt off in a thaw helps more. Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Does a rented home need the landlord involved for this work?

Repairing a lock so it works as before is ordinary maintenance, but anything that changes who can open the door, such as a rekeyed cylinder or new keys, is something a tenant and landlord are expected to agree on and share keys for. The locksmith asks up front who should receive keys and can leave a note of what was done for the property manager, so both sides know what is on the door. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

Can a safe be repaired instead of replaced after drilling?

Often, yes, particularly for a mechanical lock, where a worn wheel pack, drive cam or spindle can be replaced individually within the existing lock body. An electronic lock's circuit board and keypad are less often repairable in place and are more commonly swapped for a comparable or higher-rated replacement unit that fits the same cutout. Safe Opening & Combination Change

How often does the battery need replacing on an electronic lock?

Most electronic locks give a low-battery warning, usually a beep or flashing light, well before they actually stop working, and replacing the battery within that same week is the safer habit rather than waiting. Depending on how often the safe is opened, a battery commonly lasts somewhere between one and several years, and keeping a spare of the correct type near the safe avoids a search once the warning starts. Safe Installation & Servicing

What is bumping, and does this stop it?

Bumping uses a specially cut key that is struck while under light turning pressure, bouncing the pins to the shear line for an instant so an ordinary cylinder opens. It works on many standard pin tumblers. A high security cylinder needs its sidebar released by separately positioned finger or rotating pins at the same moment, and a bump key cannot set those, so the plug stays locked. It is one of the clearest advantages of the upgrade. High Security Locks

How often should a business change its keys as a matter of routine?

There is no fixed interval. Rekey on events rather than on a calendar: a key not returned, a lease change, a break-in, a renovation crew finished, or a key count that no longer matches the register. Businesses with a good register and a restricted keyway often go years between rekeys because nothing prompts one. A yearly check of the register against the keys on the hook is the habit that tells you when the time has come. Commercial Rekeying

Can my existing locks be used, or do I need all new hardware?

Many existing cylinders can join a new hierarchy as they are, once their keyway and condition are confirmed compatible. Others, particularly older or mismatched hardware, are replaced so the whole system pins cleanly without cross-keying. The assessment identifies which doors fall into each group before any work begins, so the plan reflects what is actually on the property rather than assuming everything needs to change. Master Key System Design

Can visitors or contractors be given temporary access?

Yes, a temporary credential can be issued for a contractor, a cleaner, or a visitor with its own schedule and, where the system supports it, an expiry so it stops working on its own once the job is done. This avoids handing out a permanent code or a key that then has to be tracked down and collected afterward. Access Control Installation

Can the door be alarmed without making it hard to open?

Yes. An exit alarm module sounds when the device is used, which tells staff a door meant to stay closed has been opened, but it does not add any resistance to the push that releases the latch. The alarm is a notification layer on top of hardware that still opens under one motion, which is why it suits stockroom, dock or perimeter doors where entry through that opening should be rare. Car Keys

How long does a car lockout take once the locksmith arrives?

Confirming identification and looking the car over take a few minutes, and the opening itself is often the shortest part. A wedge-and-reach entry or a picked door cylinder on a common car is a matter of minutes; a frozen lock, a dead car battery or a car with hidden cylinders takes longer. Cutting and programming a replacement key is a separate stage that adds time, and you are given a sense of it before it starts. Car Lockout Service

The fob died in the cold. Is that a battery or the key?

Almost always the battery. Coin cells deliver less in deep cold, and a cell that was already weak goes quiet on the first bitter morning. Most cars still start with a flat fob if it is pressed to the start button or laid in a marked slot, and the emergency blade opens the door. Replace the cell, and if the fob stays silent with a fresh one, the remote board or a corroded contact is the next thing to look at. Car Key Replacement

Can one key work for two vehicles?

Sometimes, when both vehicles share a compatible lock family and immobilizer system, most often two vehicles from the same manufacturer and a similar era. Sharing a keyway is not enough on its own: the two locks also need a bitting that satisfies both, or one vehicle's cylinders get rekeyed to match, and the transponder has to be capable of authorization on both immobilizers. Where they do not line up, the practical answer is two separate keys carried together on one ring. Spare Car Key Duplication

Do all vehicles support passive or proximity entry programming?

No. Passive entry depends on the vehicle being built with the receivers and hardware for it in the first place, not just on the fob being programmed correctly. A vehicle with a basic remote-and-blade key system has no passive entry to program, no matter which fob is registered to it, so the vehicle's own equipment sets the ceiling on what programming can offer.
